It's Official...We've lost another business

Looking at the KNS movie listings this morning, I was not surprised to read that our Farragut Regal Movie Theatre has now been closed. Well, from what I understood that was about 3% of our tax revenue. That may not sound like much, but when the town is dipping from the rainy day fund to the tune of about $2 Million, every dollar counts! I would hope that we could find a use for the site that will bring people into our town and spend money here. Anyone got any ideas? I'd consider opening up a community center there, but I know I can't afford the lease or the renovation costs. Maybe our town leaders should consider it.

For either the former theatre's space or K-Mart's or both...maybe we should consider doing something for those less fortunate---why not allow a homeless agency to utilize the facility. Federal funds could be used to house these folks in one of these facilities.

The homeless shelter idea is not a bad one; decentralization could offer new opportunities to those in need and Farragut could be a shining example of doing the right thing.

Are their any homeless people in Farragut? There are three homeless shelters in downtown Knoxville. Homeless shelters are in urban environments not suburban ones. Pretty clear that neither of you live in Farragut or have much use for it. Why do you waste your time here? I don’t understand why you feel the need to bash our town. You accuse us of creating sprawl and now you tell us we don’t do enough for the less fortunate. Are you jealous? Seriously, what is your problem?

This is a great opportunity for First Baptist Concord to move from the old Goodys at the end of the Ingles center to the theater. There was some talk a few years ago about this. Now id the time. The church has and continues to be a great corporate citizen to the town.

That might be good for the church but it would be bad for the town. Lets keep retail on Kingston Pike. The church can buy land for a school somewhere else.

The school is housed in the main church building. The space at the old Goody's is primarily used for the youth group on Wednesdays and Sundays. The theater would be gret for the church to provide space for the growing middle/high school and also allow the recreation committee to expand the recreation ministry. Keeping retail on Kingston Pike is impossible, due to Turkey Creek. There is NO benefit to locate on the pike in Farragut when you can go where the people are... For exaple I have friends from Oak Ridge and Halls that shop and dine at Turkey Creek and they will NEVER shop in Farragut, if you own a business and can locate three miles east where the masses are or three miles west in Farragut, where even the residents don't support local business, where we will locate?

Actually, there are homeless folks in Farragut *where I live*; sorry for creating a stir---I certainly didn't mean to imply that "we don't do enough for those less fortunate". Regarding location, the shelters are not downtown because that's were the homeless are----the homeless are downtown because that's were the shelters are.

The shelters are downtown because of low property taxes, rent, and proximity to the bus station. I have read that the majority of Knoxville's homeless are not from Knoxville and that they come from far and wide and actually heard of Knoxville from other homeless people in other cities. It is a serious issue and I am glad there are fine ministries working on the problem. I think more drug and alcohol consoling is needed along with job placement. It would have been great if some of the lottery money could have been used for the homeless. If there are homeless people on Grigsby Chapel Road then the problem is pretty bad. Have you thought about giving them a bus pass and a map to the downtown shelters? I think the Sheriffs Department will transport them to the downtown shelters.

Should have read counseling not consoling.

Actually, the homeless shelters do not pay property taxes regardless of their location due to their exempt status and with the property values in downtown where they are now, it might make more sense to have homeless services in the suburbs. Proximity to the bus station only assists "out of town" homeless migrate here so it would be a plus in that respect to not be downtown also.

With all of that said, I DO NOT want them in Farragut! Doing so would hurt our property values and putting a tax exempt entity in Farragut doesn't help the financial burden that needs to be covered by property taxes.

The "fine ministries" have harmed out area but making East TN a destination for the downtrodden but the worst thing we can do is to move it to Farragut.

The Regal theater has a lease to 2013. Another theater chain may buy it.
