Are people too self-centered?
What is wrong with people lately? Are we moving down a path where everyone around us is just a bunch of chopped liver? Reason I'm asking is I was looking at the last item in one of our local shops when someone walked up, picked it up and then headed out the checkout lane. Well, I guess it was a good thing that I didn't need one of them, otherwise I'd have been mad. But have we become so self-centered that other people don't matter? Looking at the other side of the coin I guess I could see that because I didn't have my hand on it, it was fair game. I guess that I'll just have to take that as a lesson learned. Oh well...

I had a similar experience when I moved to Farragut last year. I've met some great people here but am amazed at the narcissism that permeates Farragut.
Sally
Thing is I've noticed it all over West Knox. I don't head downtown all that often, but I've heard it happens there, too. Maybe it's just an East TN thing???
I work at UT and visit downtown for lunch, etc. and have only experienced it in Farragut. I would blame the transplanted "yankees" but I am one myself ;-) Overall, east Tennesseans have been wonderful to me. Maybe the pace is more rushed in Farragut?
Ten years ago you did not see much of this in Farragut. Today it is worse in Farragut for some reason. A negative side affect of money and affluence? Or maybe it is the arrival of short timers. People that will only stay from three to five years. This is epidemic in parts Florida. The lack of manners and empathy show how self centered these people are.
It's a winner-takes-all world. Just consider what's on TV these days: It's nothing but reality competition shows, where the only way to succeed is to be ruthless and plain uncaring; any expression of compassion is promptly punished. That's what our kids are learning, eat or become eaten, there's nothing for the meek to inherit in America.
So, to answer your question, yes, people are too self-centered; but the reason for it here is probably related to upbringing and life experience, not a lack of character.
Interesting point Daliwood. But aren't social graces a part of ones character? I know plenty of Yanks and Southerners who were taught that you should always account for other people no matter who they are and be nice to them. So if its related to upbringing and life experience, maybe those folks need a humbling experience in order to realize that they're not the only ones around in this world?
I'm kind of glad Sally breached the subject. As a Farragut resident for several years, it is depressing the way people treat one another here. It is also obvious with regard to driving courtesy. It seems to me that people in other parts of Knoxville are simply nicer and more respectful of others. I guess all we can do is to follow the golden rule as much as possible.

Well that's all fine and dandy as long as the folks you're dealing with are willing to follow the same rule. However, I'm learning more and more that in our society that the "me first" mentality along with "instant gratification" are taking over. People are no longer thinking of the impact they have on others, and that's a shame.
Then leave.

I'm sorry, it's that kind of attitude that should be the ones leaving!

Unfortunately, this appears to be the rule rather than the exception in Farragut---although I find folk in other parts much more courteous and down-to-earth.
