Here we go again...

Well, gas prices are going up again. This time due to Hurricane Rita. Now can someone please tell me the logic of having a very significant portion of our refining capabilitity in ONE AREA? I know it is close to where the majority of oil comes into our country, but it makes us vulnerable when something significant like this happens. Come on, we've essentially put most of our eggs in one basket and it looks like the basket may be crushed by the end of the weekend if the worst case scenarios play out. Where's our backup capabilities when we need them most? Lining shareholder's and executive pockets apparently. The oil companies have refused to make new refineries because they cite costs as being too high. Well, obviously the benefits now are obvious (at least to me).

The cost of refineries is to high do to strict restrictions put on refineries by the EPA. A new refinery hasn't been built in this country in 25 years. Of course the EPA is influenced by the enviromentalists who are at the root of most cost increases in this country on every day commodities such as gas, electricity and food. So next time you see a tree hugging whale kissing enviro-extremist, kick him in the granoles! That should make you feel better.

That's utter nonsense at best and an outright lie at worst. It's one of the mountain of lies that the Republicans use to try to trash environmentalists. I worked for EPA for 22 years, and not once did I see the agency stop a refinery. The oil industry stopped all plans to build refineries--not because of environmental concerns, costs, or EPA, but because they want refining capacity to be less than demand to sustain their massive profits.

Stop relying on the people who lied about Iraq for your beliefs. They couldn't tell the truth if their lives depended on it.

If you believe what you say, please provide one single example of a refinery not being built because of EPA. One single example. Just one. Give data, paying particular attention to EPA's regulatory compliance responsibilities and processes, and show the specific points at which any environmentalists affected the process.
