Virtue Road Comments in Farragut Press

Well, if you've been reading the FP, you've seen many comments about this road. This is a safe road as long as you follow the speed limit and observe common courtesy. As a concerned resident of the town, I've voiced my opinion here, and it's to create reasons to follow the speed limit (in other words, traffic calming). The time has come for Farragut and East Tennessee in General to get off the "build it bigger and faster" mentality. All we've done is create an environment where people continually speed up and down Virtue Road, Kingston Pike, Pellissippi Parkway, I-40, Middlebrook Pike, Parkside Drive/Grigsby Chapel Road, etc. And when someone gets hurt or dies, we all become outraged, but what have we done to slow ourselves? I have started to drive no faster than 5 mph over the speed limit, even though I know that has caused many people to get mad. Well guess what, gaining 15 seconds by speeding through town doesn't get you much in terms of quality of life. Besides, what do you do with that time? Wait at a stop light! Trust me, I've seen it happen time & time again on Parkside Drive. Some guy zooms by me @ 50+mph (I've seen them drive by @ 70mph) and I catch up to him at the next light. But until we get off this mentality that we need to get there first, we're going to continue seeing articles in the paper where people get hurt.

Parents, your children will do exactly the same things you do, so what is your example saying to them when you speed, cut people off, etc.? They're the ones who suffer, because they really haven't mastered the art of driving. My father when he taught me how to drive, said "take it easy, get there safe--it's better than not getting there at all." He did speed on occasion, but usually not in or through towns.

I think its time to get a campaign going to slow the roads down and get people being courteous again, don't you?

So what if I drive the speed limit. What about the other guy? Do you know how many people cross the centerline because they are speeding or not paying attenion.

Well, I know. Until there is more enforcement of the current laws, you just have to drive defensively (and use your horn lightly for those folk not paying attention).

It's a shame we have to suffer for the mistakes of a few. I know my auto insurance rates are higher than they should be just because I live in Farragut. They say the number of accidents, the speed limits are too high, and even with the limits the way they are you still have speeders. If insurers know it, then why aren't the folks that can do something about it doing it?

Well, I was looking at what some other countries are doing with traffic, and back in December's issue of Wired Magazine, there was a very interesting article. The road designer believes that if a sign is put up its a sign of failure! How's that for cleaning up the landscape?!?!

Well, about the only thing we can do is ask the FBMA to form a safety commission to tackle these concerns. I've heard that there is a group called Citizens for Responsible Growth and Development in Farragut (or something along those lines) that may be able to influence some of the aldermen. But until people start teaching their kids a better way and actually living it, we'll never get there. There are just too many un-informed people out here who choose to do as they please in their starter castles. As long as the selfish mentality exists, there will be people that get hurt.

As always, it's just an opinion...

Why doesn't Farragut have a safety commission? That is about the only commission they don't have.

Jimmy B,

I know it's rough trying to be the "good guy" in a "bad neighborhood", but don't worry, more of us who are driving the speed limit will be joining you! Just keep on doing what you're doing and eventually we'll get there. The saying "one man can make a difference" only holds true if you follow through to the end.
